We're now only 310km away from Chengdu in a one-street town called Han Yuan. It would've been nice had we been able to get tickets to connect onto Chengdu today but we were unlucky as usual and we arrived too late to buy any.
A one-street town in China!!! This takes the crown as the most yokel place I've ever been to. Little old ladies will come aboard the buses to sell boiled eggs from large pots for 1rmb each. The freakshow of my 3 white companions gets even more amusing - we were tailed unknowingly by Chinese undercover police to our hotel. After we'd checked into another dodgy dump for 2 hours we got a knock on the door and it was a policeman in plainclothes. He was saying to me that we couldn't stay in that hotel because it was illegal for foreigners and also because he was worried about our safety and security - it's good to know that the Chinese police are looking after us. It was the first time I policeman has had to show his badge to me just like in the movies to identify himself to me - I thought it was cool.
To solve our problem he gave us a free ride in his police 4WD to a hotel 'for foreigners' which wasn't even as nice as the previous one. Hugo tells me that the showers were really nice apart from the fact there were tampons and sanitary napkins stuck on the walls.
My fast continues as I get over my stomach problems -Phil watches me like a hawk to make sure I don't eat anything, damn bastard - I was really hungry today! I guess it's for my own good in the end though. We had nothing to do for the rest of the day except walk around to see the shops, get stared at my the locals again but at least we visited a Chinese kindergarten to see how the kids were doing - the sight of Phil makes them cry. Our pirate DVDs that we bought in Xichang for 5rmb each also came in handy and we just watched 'Blood Diamond' with Leo Di Caprio as there was nothing else at all to do. His South African accent is horrible - he sounds almost Australian at times.
We've got tickets fro the last 310km leg of our 1062km trip from Lijiang to Chengdu for tomorrow morning at 6:40am and I'm really looking forward to getting there! Here's a postcard from rural China - check out the condition of the roads and factories in Panzhihua where I was a couple of days ago.
