10/3/07 To the farthest reaches of the Chinese Empire we go...

I'm on the train right now from Lanzhou to JiaYuGuan 嘉峪关 - Jiayuguan was a fort built during the Ming Dynasty to mark the border of the then Chinese empire. All I can say right now is that trains are infinitely more comfortable than buses although the top bunk is quite claustrophobic because I'm so close to the ceiling. I just spent another half an hour engaged in conversation with an old Chinese guy about the evils of Japan - a familiar and regular topic of conversation on trains. Instead of 'How's the weather?' it's 'I can't stand those Japanese, what do you think of the Japs?'

Lanzhou Night Markets

I've spent the last 2 days in Lanzhou city and accomplished my greatest mission of all - to procure precious train tickets to go to Lhasa. They were only 540rmb but best of all we don't need these so called 'Tibet Permits' because the system has been scrapped in Lanzhou or so the Public Security Bureau tells me. I will be heading over there with Phil, Hugo and Pauline on 17/3/07 on the world highest railway!! I'm so excited...

Lanzhou itself is just another typical big Chinese metropolis albeit with lots of large Mosques - you can see their minarets all over the city - so we haven't got up to anything of note in the last 48 hours.

Yellow River next to Lanzhou

The only thing we did today was fly kites on the banks of the Yellow River. It was Saturday today so lots of Chinese families were having a 'day out' on a park on the bank. They were flying kites, playing basketball and soccer. The little kids were running around. I'd never flown a kite before so Huge and I shelled out 36 rmb for 2 kites and managed to have hours of fun - eventually 2 little kids joined us as well, a 3 year old boy and his 10 year old sister, I have no idea where their parents were but its a sign of a safe society when little kids can still go to the park to play by themselves. It was lots of fun just having an average Chinese 'Saturday Outing'!
